How We Grow Seedlings at Grounded Goods
A slow, seasonal approach to strong plants
At Grounded Goods, growing seedlings isn’t about speed or volume. It’s about creating strong, resilient plants that can settle into your garden and thrive long after they leave our hands.
Our approach is shaped by the land we live on in the Lockyer Valley and guided by seasonal rhythms, soil health, and patience.
Starting with soil, always
Healthy seedlings begin with healthy soil. We use balanced, living soil blends that support root development rather than force fast top growth. A good seedling should feel sturdy, not stretched or fragile.
Our focus is on soil that holds moisture well, drains freely, and contains enough organic matter to feed young plants slowly as they grow.
Choosing seeds that suit the season
Rather than sowing everything at once, we select seeds that align with the current season and temperature range. This reduces stress on seedlings and helps them establish more easily once planted out.
Depending on the time of year, we often focus on:
Cooler months:
Spinach
Lettuce varieties
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Kale
Silverbeet
Peas
Warmer months:
Tomatoes
Capsicum
Eggplant
Zucchini
Cucumber
Basil
Sunflowers
Growing seasonally allows plants to grow at a natural pace, reducing the need for intervention later.
Watering with intention
Seedlings are watered gently and consistently, often using rainwater collected on our property. Rather than frequent shallow watering, we aim to encourage roots to grow downward and strengthen early.
This approach helps seedlings adapt better once they move into garden beds, where water availability may vary.
No sprays, no shortcuts
We avoid chemical sprays and quick fixes. Instead, we focus on soil health, airflow, and appropriate spacing to minimise disease and stress.
Seedlings grown slowly and naturally are often more resilient and adaptable once planted out.
Growing for real gardens
Every seedling we grow is intended for a real garden, whether that’s a backyard bed, a balcony pot, or a larger growing space. Our aim is to offer seedlings that integrate easily into your garden and support long term growth.
Growing seedlings is about building foundations. When we respect the process and work with the land, plants grow stronger and more capable of supporting us in return.
