How to Prepare Your Family for a Relaxed Photography Session

A calm approach for real moments

Preparing for a family photography session doesn’t require strict plans or perfect behaviour. In fact, the most meaningful photographs often come from days that are allowed to unfold gently, without pressure or expectation.

My approach to family photography is built around creating space. Space for children to be themselves. Space for parents to slow down. Space for moments to emerge naturally rather than being directed.

Begin with a conversation, not instructions

For children, especially, it helps to frame the session as time together rather than something they need to “do”. Let them know we’ll be spending time walking, sitting, talking or playing. There’s no need to mention photos or cameras in detail. When children understand they aren’t being assessed or managed, they relax.

Keep the day light and unrushed

If possible, avoid packing the day with activities beforehand. A rushed morning or afternoon can carry tension into the session. Allow time to arrive calmly, even if that means being a little early and sitting together quietly.

Honour routines where you can

Snacks, rest, comfort items and familiar rhythms are welcome. These small anchors help children feel safe, and that sense of safety shows clearly in photographs.

Trust the process

You don’t need to plan moments or interactions. My role is to guide gently and observe what unfolds. The most meaningful photographs often happen when expectations are released.

When families arrive open and unguarded, the session becomes less about being photographed and more about being together. That’s where honest imagery begins.
